Chinese Calligraphy for Beginners: The Five Script Styles
Chinese calligraphy has five major script styles, from ancient seal script to flowing cursive. Here is what each one is and where to start.
The five script styles
Chinese calligraphy developed five major scripts over three thousand years. Each has a distinct character, history and use. Learning the differences is the first step to appreciating — and practising — the art.
They are usually introduced from oldest to newest, but for a beginner, the learning order is different: start with regular script, and explore the others as you progress.
Seal script (篆书)
The oldest formal script, used on seals and inscriptions. It has rounded, uniform strokes and a mysterious, archaic beauty. Seal script is rarely used for everyday writing today, but it remains the script of official seals — hence the name.
Clerical script (隶书)
A bridge script from the Han dynasty, with flat, wide strokes and a characteristic "silkworm head and wild-goose tail" on horizontal strokes. It reads clearly and is popular for headers and formal documents.
Regular script (楷书)
The standard script every learner starts with. Its strokes are clear, balanced and structured. If you are learning to write Chinese characters, regular script is your foundation. All our character workbooks use regular script as the model.
Running script (行书)
A semi-cursive script where strokes connect naturally, like neat fast handwriting. It is faster to write than regular script while remaining legible. Many people use running script for everyday notes once they master regular script.
Cursive script (草书)
The most expressive and abstract script, where strokes flow together and characters are simplified. Cursive is often closer to art than writing — beautiful to look at, but hard to read without training.
Tools and how to start
The traditional "four treasures" are the brush (毛笔), ink (墨), paper (宣纸) and inkstone (砚). For a beginner, a medium-size soft brush, bottled ink and practice paper are enough. Start by learning the basic strokes — horizontal, vertical, dot, hook and press — in regular script.
Our calligraphy wall art showcases finished masterpieces in several scripts, and our character workbooks give you the regular-script foundation to begin.
